A referral is a letter from one doctor to another, asking them to see you about a particular concern. Many clinics ask for one before they will book an appointment. Your practitioner will discuss whether a referral suits your circumstances, and what it would say about your history.
You can tell your practitioner if you already have someone in mind, or a location that suits you. They will discuss the options with you. What a referral says is a clinical decision, so your practitioner writes it based on their assessment of your concern.
No. A referral is provided only where your practitioner considers it clinically appropriate after speaking with you. They may instead suggest a test, monitoring, advice, or an in-person examination first. If they do not think a referral fits, they will explain their reasoning.
We work alongside your usual care. With your consent, your practitioner can share what was discussed so your regular GP has the full picture. If an in-person examination would help before a referral is written, your practitioner will tell you during the consultation.
